i was looking at Darren's blog, his recent post was about his christmas trip to hong kong. i've lived in malaysia for ten years now, but hong kong is always my home too.
i came across this photo on the blog (hope he doesn't mind me stealing it)

that's Heritage 1881. beautiful innit? it's an old police station renovated into a high-end shopping area. i remember when i was there last summer, i didn't see any shops. were they there then? perhaps i was too distracted by my "tourguide" to see. i remember he wasn't very good at the tourguiding thing. he asked for directions to cross the road to the space museum, the lady gave him a weird look, and pointed to the staircase behind him.

Heritage 1881 was very plain then. Colonial buildings lined with pillars, buildings connected by spiral stairwells, and a cannon built on the veranda to commemorate the police force. i remember standing on the veranda and taking this picture of the cannon, and thinking this building was rather boring.
On Christmas however, these buildings, like every other corner of hong kong were covered in festive lights, crowded to the brim with people, filled with noise and laughter, and the sky was a black backdrop to which the symphonies of lights and fireworks played against.
home, despite its polluted air and hectic lifestyle, is beautiful.
i miss home.
